Transportation
Great transportation is key to a great bid and a great Simlympic host. What are everyones thoughts on transportation systems and their role in the Simlympics?
I believe every venue should be within walking distance of some form of public transportation, to encourage sustainability within the city. Extra public transportation would also leave a lasting legacy which will aid the citizens far more than stadiums .

Re: Transportation
I agree completly.I always look to see what someone has done to the transit networks for a simlympics.Mass Trnasit is the key to keeping the venues easily accesed.and is also a way for visitors to see more of the city than just the Simlympic park and venues
Re: Transportation
i agree! i think that a mass transit map should be provided with the bid. it fasinates me to see that stuff and if the bidder has time, they should create a special simlympic line that has been in previous bids.
this is off topic but i don't know where to put this comment:
I think it would also be realistic to have all bidders have a slogan with their bid...

It' s essential you are right Slaker, and I think that should be well coordinated the development between public and private transport, favouring more the first. A good transport system is certainly the best legacy that the games can leave to a city.

Re: Transportation
Good point canuck, a good transportation system not only enables the visitors to explore the venues but also the rest of the city, something which should definitely be encouraged.
And GreekMan, yeah slogans would be nice, but I don't think it's ever going to be something we'll make a requirement. However, I shall add it to the suggested list of what a bid should have .

Re: Transportation
Transportation is critical in the Sim/olympics. I think it was the Lake Placid, New York Winter Games of1980 that were notorious for transportation issues. The key is to provide multi-modal opportunities to get large groups of people around the games, including reliable transit that can get athletes to events on time. I think it's a bonus if that transportation infrastructure can be used as the Simolympic Park is recreated into some other sort of activity centre after the games are over.

Re: Transportation
Yeah, it'd definitely be great if the transportation built for the games can be fully implemented into the cities transportation system once the games are over.

Re: Transportation
Hosting the games will bring huge amounts of people into your city, and therefore a decent mass transit system is essential in order for your city to cope. I believe, there should be at least a decent bus system and some form of rail, subway etc. There should also be a quick and easy route directly connecting the simlympic venues to the downtown area.

Yeah definitely, sometimes you see bids where there isn't a quick route between the main venues and the city centre, sometimes involving station changes - totally impractical when you have tens of thousands returning to hotels after the games.

Re: Transportation
I really do believe a very efficient and effective mass transit system is a crucial element in running a successful Simlympics, from the bid to the actual competition. It would be really great if you invest well in providing transportation early on while your city develops so that it can be fully ready once you want to bid your city for the next one.
A quick (and true) example: in my latest SC4 city, Saint Paul, almost all of the 800,000 people (95%) use public transportation to go to work (that includes walking and biking). In stark contrast, 45,000 people (and falling) drive cars.
