ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON EMPEROR
by Marco de Arronax[/b]

Francistown, GRA - The King is currently in critical condition at Princess Amanthis Royal Hospital after being attacked by one of his own guards, who was assigned to ensure his safety during the traditional annual feast in honor of the birthday of the next-in-line to the throne, in this case, his oldest son Prince Imperial Charles.
After the threatening letter sent little more than a week ago, security surrounding both the preparations for the feast, and the King, were stepped up. Still, however, no one suspected that the danger lay in one of the King's own guards.
The guard, David Zhou, was one of the guards posted around the perimeter fence around the feast. During what was planned to be the middle of the feast, while the Emperor was raising a toast in honor of the Prince, Zhou stepped inside the perimeter, and before anyone knew what was happening, he had pulled out his submachine gun and started firing. Three people were killed and seven were wounded before the firearm fortunately jammed, giving time for the other Royal Guards to overwhelm him. One of the people who was killed was the Duke of Mantaines, the husband of Princess May. He was fatally wounded while attempting to divert the attention of Zhou by attacking him with a kitchen knife. He wasn't able to kill him, or even wound him, but he did startle him enough that he accidentally jammed his gun, and you know the rest.
The Emperor was fortunately only hit in the arm, but he subsequently collapsed, apparently from a heart attack. The Prince Imperial was more seriously wounded, in the right shoulder, but, unlike his father, he wasn't incapacitated, and so he was able to take the role of Emperor-Regent, which he still holds as of now. His first act was to order that Zhou be cast into the darkest dungeon, to await his trial, which shall take place in two days.

List of people killed or wounded in the attack:
Duke Horace Miller - fatally wounded
Martha Servadac - local, killed instantly
Zachary Aurisky - son of the Viscount of Francistown, fatally wounded

Prince Imperial Charles Petersroy - seriously wounded
King-Emperor Daniel IV & I - wounded
Phillip Jamies - local, wounded
Prince Luke Petersroy - slightly wounded
Marco de Arronax - slightly wounded
Duke Andrew Smithson - wounded
Arnold Servadac - local, seriously wounded

This is not the first time that there has been an assasination attempt on the King. In fact, there have been twelve other attempts since he came to power in 1997. The most elaborate was undoubtably the 2006 attempt, in which Spanish terrorists plotted to blow up the royal airstrip with gunpowder. However, they were caught, thanks to a cave-in at one end of the runway a few days before it was to take place, which revealed the vast undergound cavern they had hollowed out specifically for this very purpose. Since the King has survived so many attempts before, why shouldn't he survive this one?

King-Emperor Daniel IV & I- A biography in brief

Francistown Times- News from the Federal Kingdom - Page 2 KingDanielIV1997-Francistown Times- News from the Federal Kingdom - Page 2 PrinceImperialCharlesPetersroyCountofTranquilViscountsSkarrandCreek1993-
L-R: King-Emperor Daniel IV & I, King-Emperor-Elect Charles I

King Daniel IV was born Prince Daniel John Alexander Phillip Petersroy, on the 19th of February, 1974, to King Daniel III and Grand Princess Alicia, the second of three sons and five daughters from his father's first wife, a little over five years after the conclusion of the Third Island War. Due to the fact that the Royal Palaces were still being reconstructed after being devastated during the aforementioned war, the Royal Family spent most of their time aboard the Royal Yacht GRY Heavenly, where the prince was born. His childhood was marked by the civil unrest that plagued both Grand and Belluterra in the 70s, caused by the wake of the Third Island War, and also in the case of Grand, the usual cause of the Spanish rebelling again. These events, and others as well, convinced the young prince that at least in the case of Grand, constitutional monarchy was a failure, and a return to the absolutism of his forefathers was nessecary. He also resolved to try to help his older brother Charles to try and reunite Grand and Belluterra, which had so fatefully separated in 1790. However, Prince Imperial Charles died after a short battle with cancer in 1986, making Daniel the new Prince Imperial, and therefore, he was to be the next in line to the throne. He soon began to take over several of the Royal duties from his aging father.
He retired from politics in 1990 to marry his childhood friend Amanthis McCloskey. However, being the next in line, he was unable to completely leave politics, and eventually, he was forced to reenter politics. The overthrow of the ruling Communist Party of Belluterra in 1992, with secret funding from Grand, brought Prince Daniel's goals one step closer to completion. That year was also the year in which he and his wife had their first child, a daughter, who they christened May, after the month she was born in. A little less than a year later, they had another child, a son, who they called Charles. Their third child, Prince Luke, was born in 1996.
King Daniel III died in late 1997, at the age of 68, thus making Daniel the new king. A few days before his coronation, his wife gave birth to another daughter, who they named Frances. A few hours after he was crowned King Daniel IV, a man tried to shoot him with a pistol, which misfired, however. This was the first of over a dozen attempts on his life over the next 13 years or so. He soon opened negotiations with the newly-inaugurated President of Belluterra to reunite the country. These overtures were favorably received, and the official date of reunion was set for May 10, 1998. When that date arrived, King Daniel I was crowned Emperor Daniel I of Belluterra, merging the two countries into one, to great celebration, after 208 years of existing separately. In 1999, King Daniel finally had the consitution amended to effectively make the nation an absolute monarchy, with the exception of Belluterra. Later that year, Prince William was born. He would be the last member of the Royal Family born in the 20th century.
Princess Amanthis was born in late 2001, providing a new member to the ever-growing Royal Family. After September 11, the nation sent their condolences to the US, while also tightening their own security, and also declaring a still-existent state of martial law in Lamer Province, in order to be able to quickly and effectively crush any uprising among the Spanish. When the US invaded Afghanistan, however, the condemnation was strong, and Grand refused to participate in any way. A few days before the US invaded Iraq in 2003, the Grand Princess had twins, who they christened Mary and Anna. When Bush invaded Iraq, King Daniel called the claims about WMD "a bunch of f****** b*******", and threatened to pull out of the UN unless either the UN stopped the US, or the US stopped the invasion. When the ultimatum expired, Grand and Belluterra did as they threatened, and left. In 2009, they launched their still-classified spaceship, unmanned. It was radio-controlled the entire flight, and successfully returned a few days later In 2010, they completed their project to send a man into space- 5 men actually, to test their own variant of the Space Shuttle, similar in some respects to both the Buran and the Space Transport System, but different in others, such as the ability to refuel in space, and the ability to leave Earth orbit. The crew made a triumphant return a few days later. In October 2010, Grand Princess Amanthis II presented him with what would be his final child, a son, who they named Prince Michael, after his recently-deceased uncle. In early 2011, the Royal House was scandalized when it was discovered that the King-Emperor's oldest daughter, Princess May, had disappeared after having an affair with an unknown person. The Princess was discovered living under an assumed name in the Stone Republic over a month later, and she was subsequently extradited to Grand, where after standing trial on numerous charges, was sentenced to a total of 25 years in prison. Later, King Daniel sent in the Republican Kingdom's official application to join the Alliance of Independent Nations as an observer. While the application was under voting, the birthday of his oldest son, Prince Imperial Charles, rolled around, During the traditional outdoor festivities, one of the King's bodyguards, now determined to have been in the pay of the outlawed SLA, or Spanish Liberation Army, turned on the King and shot him twice. The Prince Imperial was one of the others who was wounded, although he was back to work within 5 days. Later, he sent in an application to join the interplanetary union, the United Sovereign Nations of the World. The nation was accepted on the 2nd of May. King-Emperor Daniel IV & I died in his bed yesterday, at 6:55 PM, not long after receiving Holy Communion, with many members of his family and friends with him. His last words, spoken to Charles, were these: "Keep our nations united."

World leaders have been invited to the funeral, which shall take place on the 10th. So far, President Kyle Johnson of New Chandler has confirmed that he will be there.

Defers Film Festival Award Ceremony takes place
by Nicholas Kawak

Francistown Times- News from the Federal Kingdom - Page 2 Arenal-volcanoFrancistown Times- News from the Federal Kingdom - Page 2 KillerParrot
Top: Loggers; Bottom: Attack of the Killer Parrots

DEFERS, RCD- Yesterday the First Defers International Film Festival Awards Ceremony took place. Anticipation was high as to which films would win awards, as many of the film companies premiering films at the festival are among the largest on Adonia. Although, of course, betting on the winners of different awards was discouraged, it was still commonplace. Speculation was especially rampant as to who would win the Golden Ceannaire (Best Director), Golden Fabhcun (Best Actor), Golden Iolar (Best Actress), and Best Overall Film awards, as they are considered to be the most prestigious in the film industry.

After the usual opening formalities, the awards began to be presented. The first one, the Defers Award for Best Romantic Drama, was presented to the Grandian film Loggers, directed by Andrew Markson, and starring such Grandian film stars as Jim Falkirk and Annette Shelling. The next one, for Best Military Film, was an incredibly close contest between Cuando Empecé Pensar (When I Started to Think), from Insulo, starring Victor Olivo as the Insulonian national hero Don Capel, and What Really Matters, a joint Grandian-Posilliponian film, directed by Tristan Lucas Hughes, and starring Désirée Jocelyn as Princess Ariana Dankov, but ended with Cuando being declared the victor.

Due to there being only one film in the "Documentary Films" category, hike, directed by Bonifaci Pearson, automatically won the award for Best Documentary Film. The Martopian film The Jungle, directed by Luke Williams, and featuring Steven Dreamer, the son of the late Martopian President, as Hunter Jackson, was also the only film in the "Nature Films" category, and so automatically won the Defers Award for Best Nature Film. The originally intended recipient of the award for Best Other Film was the Grandian Mystery in Erikkson, directed by Sam Brian, and starring Anna Shmidt as Ruth von Dellwick, but on the morning of the ceremony, all the judges unanimously voted to change that to Attack of the Killer Parrots, also a Grandian film, directed by Kyle Grant, of Trentannian ancestry.

After these awards came the ones that were most looked forward to, colloquially referred to as the "Golden Four". The first one, the Defers Golden Ceannaire for Best Director, went to the Ruterian Jaime Aragon, who directed The Time, which has been praised for its stunning visual effects, but which has fallen short in other areas. After that, the Defers Golden Fabhcun for Best Actor was presented to Trentannian-Grandian Andy Norman, who portrays New Friscian detective Tommy la Fon in Attack of the Killer Parrots. The Defers Golden Iolar for Best Actress was next, and was presented to Posilliponian Désirée Jocelyn, who portrays Princess Ariana Dankov in What Really Matters.

The final, and most anticipated award, the Defers Award for Best Overall Film, was to be presented to one of the following nominees:
Loggers
The Jungle
hike
Cuando Empecé Pensar
Attack of the Killer Parrots

After a suspenseful wait, the winner was announced to be Loggers, to much applause. In the words of Fin Carter, the main presenter of the Festival: "This film featured such a unique story line with new twists everywhere but not so twisty that it was incomprehensible. It was an incredible tragedy and surely, the production staff should remain together to create more films and return down the road in the festival."

Table of Awards:

Attack of the Killer Parrots (2) (Best Other Film, Golden Fabhcun [Best Actor])
Constantly Meeting (0)
Cuando Empecé Pensar (1) (Best Military Film)
hike (1) (Best Documentary Film)
Loggers (2) (Best Romantic Drama, Best Overall Film)
Mystery in Erikkson (0)
The Jungle (1) (Best Nature Film)
The Time (1) (Golden Ceannaire [Best Director])
Through the Western Hedges (0)
What Really Matters (1) (Golden Iolar [Best Actress])

APELKOS, MAL- The Ministry of Defense wishes to inform the USNW that it will be testing a live nuclear missile on the 20th, which shall, after being launched from a military base in Grand, enter orbit, and fly over the following countries, in the following order: Puget, Andarana, Alzata, and Zebtesia. Utrova Attacked!!!
by Amy Higgins

Francistown Times- News from the Federal Kingdom - Page 2 675997526_7uWSj-L
Utrovan task force en route to Usenbal
ORKOVGRAD, UTR- Things are in a state of confusion here in the Utrovan capital, as we have received word that a large Rallistanian army has attempted to invade Utrova via Solvia, a former USNW member state. However, thanks to the excellent defenses in place on the Solvian-Utrovan border, most of the Rallistanians didn't make it home alive, let alone in one piece. During the confusion, four nuclear landmines were detonated, vaporizing thousands of the enemy on the spot. Hours later, Rallistanian dictator Usef Sanhidrin issued a declaration of war against Utrova. A large number of bombers & fighters were dispatched to destroy Utrovan cities near to the border, but most of them were shot down over Solvian territory by the SAM launchers placed around the border. Utrova has just dispatched a large task force to launch a counterattack on Rallistanian soil. Our beloved Charles I has pledged that he will provide, to the best of his ability, whatever his cousin, Tsar Stanislav VIII, needs to defend Utrova.

Speculation is rife, especially as to what could be the cause of this sudden invasion, and also about what role Solvia is playing in the conflict, as the original invasion was launched from Solvian territory, and many of the invading aircraft were shot down over Solvia. More on this story as it develops.
