Peterson Stadium collapse kills 20, injures more

DAWSON - 20 members of the Eagle Squadron supporter group for the North Dawson Athletics Club's association football team (popularly named the Eagles) were killed when a large piece of the roof of Peterson Stadium fell on top of them, also injuring several more people during a pre-season match against Vancouver United. The stadium, built in 1933 and renovated in 2000 as part of Dawson's "Better Sporting" campaign, can hold 32,000 people and hosts several teams from the North Dawson superclub, including their American football team and rugby union team. It will be replaced in the beginning of the second half of next season with the 88,000-capacity Eagles Stadium under construction adjacent to the current structure. The roof is made of reinforced concrete and the steel was made of low quality to save costs and ultimately causing dangerous corrosion. The stadium will be closed permanently due to this accident and the first half of the season will be played at the Dawson Bowl, home of rival Dawson Ducks.

ClarkSPORT Park opens to fanfare

CLARKSPORT - The second-division Clarksport Chargers celebrated the opening of their new, 29,000-capacity stadium by defeating the Dawson Ducks 4-3 in a sold-out friendly. The new stadium is located adjacent to the Puget Sound and is fully enclosed, though the stands that don't face towards the sound can be removed for league matches, reducing capacity to 26,700. ClarkSPORT, a sports equipment company founded and based in the city, is the official sponsor of the stadium as well as the kit sponsor. The stadium is one of several new venues for lower-tiered football and baseball being built around the country, as well as in the first tier. Other new stadiums next year include the Eagles Stadium in Dawson and the New East Kalama Park in Kalama.

VANCOUVER - Markus Lahm, CEO of Escambian sports equipment manufacturer and official kit maker of the AIFF Devine Athletics, unveiled a pair of new kits for the Vancouver men's national football team today. The home kit features alternating dark blue and gold horizontal stripes, while the away kit has faded gold stripes. The kit will be first worn at the 2011 Dawson Trophy during a match against Linktoria on August 3.
