Special Olympics? Empty Special Olympics?

Post by dljrfn2000 Sat Feb 20, 2010 2:18 pm

Ok so little known fact is I'm actually an official for the Connecticut State Special Olympics, Soccer Ref during the summer and cross country skiing judge in the winter months (did down hill skiing once and suffered some nasty frost bite on my hands decided that was the last time I was going up there lol) well we got rid of the parasimlympics but I was curious if there was interest in doing a special Olympics type event with some other special olympic specific events. It would be a much smaller undertaking than a simlympics games but still a cool event to host for those looking to gain some experience in hosting events and specifically an olympic like event. Not really saying oh we should do this yet, just wanna see what the thought on this is right now? Good idea, bad idea, what do you like about it what don't you like?

We have gone over adding this kind of event before with the Youth games, it would basically be the same thing as the Simlympics because there's really no way to make the two different. If we ever did find a way I think a Youth games would be the best choice.

We have done Sim-paralympics before, but stopped so we could get the main Simlympics in order first.

Well I know the special olympics has many sports that are not regular olympic sports (ie: Roller hockey where you sit on those little scooter things and play hockey sitting down.... actually very entertaining to play and watch) I know from my position as a judge in the winter games there is also snow shoe races, and in soccer there are 2 classes of soccer, 11 v 11 and 8 v 8 which are played on different fields. Which is why I think a special olympics may actually be better than a youth games because its not just a recreation of the adult sports there are some distinct differences and use much smaller venues than the olympics.

Basically this. A ParaSimlympics is something I still want to happen, we're just focused on the main Simlympics at this precise moment. When we do turn to the ParaSimlympics though, I think it's safe to assume it will be tagged on to the end of the main games as per the case in the Olympics, though.
