The Weather
This is just a general thread where you can show pictures of hte weather where you live or have visited recently. I decided to do this as Melbourne has just gone through some EXTREME weather conditions. Last week we had three consecutive days of 43C and above. And today we broke the record for hottest temperature ever in Melbourne and the hottest day in a capital city in Australia of 46.6C so apparently 115F. This has sparked massive bush fires across the State of Victoria.
I will post more photos of it as i find good ones. was just wondering, has any of this made international news and been reported where you live?

Re: The Weather
If I'm not wrong, the "heatwave" that happened in Australia did came onto the news in Singapore last week I think. Massive bushfires were reported according the news.
Re: The Weather

Re: The Weather
The death toll has climbed to 25 in the Victorian bushfires, and is expected to reach 40 and even higher. This has not been the biggest fire but one the deadliest we have ever had

Re: The Weather
Both the Australian bushfire and New York Blizzard (if I'm not wrong) have been featured on the news in Singapore.
Just blame it on global warming.
In Singapore, the weather's just fine. We usually get flash floods in November, December and January every year. In the middle of the year, haze may be a problem too. But that's all in the past. The situation is better now, although it can happen again...

Re: The Weather
They are. The ecosystem is even designed around periodic bushfires - trees like eucalypts are extremely flammable.Aranho wrote:By the way, are bushfires common in Australia?

Re: The Weather
they are common. we have them every year, but not this big and deadly. there have not been any major bushfires for a while and the heat and lack of rain have caused extremely dry and flammable conditions. as Joe said, the ecosystem relies on fires to re-generate, open sead pods etc.
At latest count, the death toll is at 76 deaths.
This is now Victoria's worst every bushfire nd is on course to become on of hte worst in Australia

the death toll has now soared to 84 deaths, with one death being that of a popular National Nine News anchor, Brian Naylor and his wife. The death toll is expected to rise above 100 deaths

Re: The Weather
the Blizzards in New York aren't due to global warming they've been having them for centuries Especially around Buffalo where they get Lake Effect Snow(Lake Effect is caused by the Colder Air mixing with the Warmer Water and causing a larger snowfall total)
Re: The Weather
well yet another unfortunate update, the death toll has climbed to 130 lives lost and could reach estimates of around 230
it is now officially Australia's worst ever natural disaster and what makes it worse is that a number of fires were deliberately lit.

Re: The Weather
Yeah, it's absolutely devastating. I heard the Aussie PM saying the arsonists could be prosecuted for Murder.

Re: The Weather
well im pretty sure i has been officially announced that the arsonists will be charged to murder. and rightly so. over night, the death toll rose to 166 and then quickly to 173 at the moment. there are fears that it could possibly reach 300 lost lives.
i remember those fires in greece a few years ago, shocking.
these recent fires have been so deadly as they moved just too quickly for people to escape. and they were extremely hot so the radiant is to blame for alot of deaths and injury.

Re: The Weather
I heard that the death toll has risen to 200+.
Those arsonists. What do they gain by doing such stupid stuff?

Re: The Weather
well luckily it is still at 181, but it is expected to rise well above 200. In the town of Marysville, population 500, so far 8 have died, but it is expected to hit 100 plus. Many other otnws have lost huge proportions of their population. all becuase some people like to light fires. disgusting

Re: The Weather
According to a local newspaper I read this Monday, the article says that the aftermath of the (still ongoing) bushfire looks like the aftermath atomic bombs dropping on Hiroshima just before the end of WWII: total wipeout and total destruction.
Re: The Weather
apparently it does. some areas have been shut down totally and no-one is allowed through as it is deemed so horrific no-one should have to see it.
a kid at my school lost his house, he live san hours drive from school so it is peculiar that someone who attends an inner-eastern elite school lost his house in a country town. they survived by going into their swimming pool and putting a fire proof cover over it. amazing. but they live in a town where 20 poeple have died

Re: The Weather
there are now grassfires in Ivanhoe, and outer suburb of Melbourne. and also a large fir in an inner city park, Yarra Bend Park. it is a parcel of forest/bush in inner Melbourne, the same type that is already burning in Victoria

Any chance it will hit Melbourne proper, or is the city safe?

Re: The Weather
People from all around the globe have probably heard about the Australian bushfires. However, not everyone has heard about the Singapore bushfire since January 2009.
In January alone, there has been 182 bushfires around Singapore which is too much for Singapore. For the first 2 weeks of February alone this year, thee has been 106 bushfires. This caused the PSI reading to reach a moderate range of 52 currently.
The biggest bushfire was the size of three soccer/football fields occuring in Punggol, an area northeast in Singapore. These two bush fires are relatively close to a private housing estate nearby. No one was evacuate as it was contained. There was one bushfire that was too close to a secondary school in Serangoon (northeast in Singapore) that the school had to be evacuated.
The bushfires did not cause any damages to properties yet.
