2020 SOG Empty 2020 SOG

Post by cormiermax Thu Oct 08, 2009 12:57 pm

So now that 2016 is over with, who's going for 2020? I can see it being North Americans turn because it would have been 24 years since Atlanta. I think Toronto, Tokyo, Cape Town, and Rome will all be bidding.

Madrid is another possibility too. In fact, the contest for the Madrid 2020 logo is open... Rolling Eyes Anyway, it wont be official till 2011, but two other Spanish cities are interested: Sevilla and Valencia.

Anyway, I read that the Cape Town bid depends of how the FIFA World Cup develops. Wink

Likewise, an Indian bid will depend a lot on how next year's Commonwealth Games go.

And somehow I don't see any Peruvian city winning it either Wink

Well, if the 2016 Games are in South America, I doubt that the 2020 Gamer are going to be in Peru, even in North America because in reality, it's the same continent.

On the map, it says Singapore is planning or have interest in bidding for the 2020 SOG. But, in reality, I doubt Singapore will do it. So I guess its a mistake by the map maker.

Several reasons why:
1) It will host the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games
2) It is facing land constrain, therefore will not have suficient space to built a Olympic Stadium unless it uses the upcoming Sports Hub Stadium.

But still, 2020 seems to be a long way to go. Maybe Singapore will be for the 2020 SOG? Still, being a Singapoream, I'm proud to have the 2010 YOG held in Singapore. Smile

Im thinking that it could be Cape Town at the moment, the IOC wants the games to go to Africa, that immediately makes it more attractive.

Toronto just won the 2015 Pan ams and the city is now preparing an Olympic bid, But I think there gonna hold it off until 2024. Cape Town is the front runner and it looks like the US is going to put up one of there B or C cities.

Quite risky. If it goes to a US city they'll have to wait possibly another 12-16 years...

The success of Cape Town's bid will depend heavily on how South Africa hosts the World Cup IMO.

I don't think we will see another US Olympics till the 2030s. Both of there last bids doing very poorly, they will have to fix there relations with the IOC before they get a successful bid in.

I don't see Canada winning, as they have the 2010 games in Vancouver, nor any of the US cities currently in the works. Birmingham AL, seriously? Maybe Minneapolis/St Paul would have a greater chance.

None of the US B cities have a chance against a city like Cape Town, They should just stick with LA Chicago and New York.

Ok anyone who thinks Birmingham has a chance to get by the USOC is lying. So that's out; Boston is the likely US Representative but I see a few problems with that.
1. Has anyone tried getting around Boston Recently?
2. Where would they put the green, and would that involve taking the Patriots out of Foxboro or god forbid giving the Revolution a stadium that's way too big for them.
3. Outside of Foxboro, I see 3 other soccer stadiums in the area including UMass Amherst, Boston College, Renchler Field and maybe a stretch to say the Yale Bowl. Not enough venues for soccer and the city of Boston has no need for another one.
4. Outside of the stadium where the Celtics play (name slipping my mind) I see again the same colleges providing for basketball venues (switching the Yale Bowl to the Hartford Civic Center and the Providence convention center) and again the city of Boston has no need for a new indoor arena.

If it weren't for those major issues I would be all for it but the fact is Boston has huge holes in it.

Minneapolis has 1 huge problem TCF Bank stadium is not suitable for being an olympic stadium I'm sorry but that's not going down.

Tulsa; Idk something about it I like.....

South America will not get the bid after Rio so Lima Peru is a long off dream.

Toronto is sort of a long shot idea... I'm not sure especially with Vancover and the disaster that was Montreal

Guadalajara seems to be Mexico, and for that matter all of North America's best bet at the moment.

In Europe Rome seems to be the only option that is receiving any sort of government backing at the moment.

Out of Asia, Tokyo seems the most likely candidate to make the short list again. Although Busan might be an option

Cape town seems to be a early favorite for the games.

My guess

Short list will be
Cape Town
Tokyo
Rome
Guadalajara

I think:
Tokyo will be out round 1
Guadalajara Round two
and Rome out round 3

Very true, I don't know why they are even thinking of using it.

dljrfn2000 wrote:Toronto is sort of a long shot idea... I'm not sure especially with Vancouver and the disaster that was Montreal

There is no dough Toronto will bid for ether 2020 or 2024, the financial problems that occurred in Montreal will have to effect on the decision as that was 30 some od years ago.

Probably wont even bid due to the drug wars plaguing Mexico right now.

actually you have a few good Arena's in and Around Boston besides the TD Gardens (BU's Arena,BC's,Harvard, even go down to the Dunkin Donuts Centre in Providence or up to Manchester and the Verizion Center) so thats not as huge of an issue.Stadia wise yeah it'd be a stretch in the Area but in all reality it's not really hard to convert Stadiums and Arena's for different uses(physically done it myself lol)

maybe minneapolis wanting to bid for the olympics will help the vikings get a new stadium. That would pretty much be the best day of my life if they got a new stadium because there lease is up on the metrodome in 2011 so theres a possibility that they might move to los angeles.. which would not be cool.

nah When I was out in Minny last summer(08 summer that is) They were already discussing the new Stadium going up in the Parking Lot of the Dome who knows maybe they'll renovate the HHDome like they're doing with BC Place. I don't see the Vikins moving it's a threat just like Lemiuex used with the Penguins to get his new Arena in Pittsburgh.

I think even if they renovate the dome the vikings still wont re-sign their lease on it because the company that owns the dome is rediculous with what they make the vikings do to play there.

well.... I'm not really sure. LA is a very strange place sports wise. They have 2 baseball teams, 2 basketball teams, no football, no hockey. It's strange... but college football is a big deal in LA with USC and UCLA. That may be a big reason
