Saint Croix Simlympic Committee



Welcome to Ville de Saint Croix! (also known as Saint Croix, Ville de Croix, Les Canaries du Saint Croix, or Les Canaries) We would also like to welcome any members of the International Simlympic Committee to our city. Please sit down wherever you like and we will begin the presentation shortly.

Fun fact: The city was officially the "Free Imperial City of Les Canaries du Saint Croix" during the Roman Empire. This is still the full official title of the city, and Les Canaries has privileges similar to those of the Croisian confederate republics in the Parliament. As a Free Imperial City, Les Canaries possesses a flag, a coat of arms, and representation in the legislature. In fact, the city almost functions as a country. (Even though it's technically a city.)



The city, which was separate from the nation due to its status at the time, was ruled by the Canariané family (who named themselves after the city). The family still rules the city. Just not through feudalism now, but through corporatism.

Transportation

The city, while it has officially been incorporated in 1789, has been inhabited since pre-historic times. Archaeologists have found evidence of pre-historic settlers living no more than 20 kilometers from the Saint Croix CBD. As many as 180 settlers lived in this region in 2000 BC. All of them were pedestrians, surprisingly. Now, more than 12.8 million people live in Metropolitan Saint Croix (Communauté métropolitaine de Saint Croix). Most commuting 40 to 50 kilometers to the city center by car, bus, or rail.









In the 2003 European heat wave, there were more than 10,000 heat-related deaths in the nation of Saint Croix alone. As a result, the government required all buildings, buses, and trains to have working air-conditioning systems.

The buses, trams, and underground rapid transit trains inside the city are heavily used. Much like Paris, the internal public transportation system of Ville de Saint Croix is extensive, with frequent stops, especially in the city center.

The ISC-designated Hotel and Convention Center





The municipal government designated the Saint Croix Marriott, the only Marriott hotel in the entire urban area, for the visitors and ISC delegates. Marriott Saint Croix, the Saint Croix national branch of Marriott International, agreed for the hotel to be the official ISC hotel. The hotel faces the French Quarter to the south and the CBD to the north, and therefore offers a great view, no matter what part of the hotel you stay in.



The hotel, and the Saint Croix Courtesy Center, both offer full street maps of the urban area, as well as maps of local businesses (such as bars, shops and restaurants) in French, English, and Portuguese. The map shown above also has French and Portuguese versions.

The Emeralde Building, located in the heart of the French Quarter, is to host the ISC Session if the city is chosen. The Emeralde Building has served as a private hotel until bankruptcy in 2011, leading to the administration of the hotel selling the building to the city government in January 2012. The municipality has cleaned and organized the hotel to use in events such as the ISC Session.

The "ISC Hall" is located on the ground floor of the building.



The headquarters of the Croisian Simlympic Committee is only twenty meters away from the Emeralde Building...

City Attractions

There are plenty of places to visit in Ville de Saint Croix. The confederation earns 45.5 million visits every year, more than six million of those visiting Ville de Saint Croix.

The French Quarter is very extensive. The Quarter is nearly one-fifth the size of the entire city. Shops, restaurants, hotels, museums, offices... The Quarter is a thriving part of the city.



Croisian cuisine is very similar to French cuisine. Many Croisian desserts resemble German and Danish cuisine, and Saint Croix is world famous for its... cheeses.

Livarot, Camembert, Saint-Nectaire, and Bleu de Gex are produced both in France, and here. But they are very popular here, as well.



There are nightclubs and bars as well... Most restaurants here have their menus in English and French. Even some restaurants put the prices of meals in three different currencies. American dollars, British pounds, and Euros. Though, it's best to bring Euros since that is the official currency.





While the CBD plays a major role in the city and the nation, it is not quite a tourist attraction. Only the Saint Croix Stock Exchange could be considered an attraction, but not much else.



Buildings surrounding the Croisian Simlympic Committee headquarters...



The Croisian Parliament, which is a bicameral legislature, located in the city's "Government Quarter", is a very historic building. That is why many tourists prefer to take pictures in front of the Parliament.

A reenactment of the 1875 Croisian Revolution takes place here.





The space observatory in Les Canaries is located 40 kilometers outside the city, on an island in Lake Courre.





The Presidential Palace is 15 km. north of the city, surrounded by picturesque canals and lawns.





The Saint Croix Underwater Reserve, located 450 kilometers south of the capital, has thousands of species of fish and is the number one spot for Croisian divers and underwater photographers. Most visitors come here by seaplanes or ferries. There are those who swim to and from here, as well.



The 250-year-old Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Office of the Premier of the Confederation, and the headquarters of the Les Canaries Times (the largest English-language newspaper in Saint Croix), are all located here in Boulogne-Billancourt, a neighborhood in Les Canaries, adjacent to the French Quarter.

The entertainment and arts district of the city, Pruppels, is home to a major art centre, an opera theater, a casino, and several museums and shops.

The Pruppels Casino is the oldest casino (as well as one of the most famous) in the entire nation. It was opened in the 1880s, when gambling was legalized. It remains open to this day, and has a restaurant and a bar as well.

Want to visit a coastal city? We have that covered. You can travel by seaplane, by intercity bus, by a ferry, or even by commuter rail, to the sandy beaches of Prince Rupert (Rupert du Rhin in French). In the seaplane tour, passengers can view the picturesque coastline of the Island of Saint Croix, as well as the coastlines of nearby islands in the Confederation.



You can also travel to the city of Kingsfield, a quaint college town surrounded by farms and historic plantations.

International Trade and More Information

The main export commodities of Saint Croix are pharmaceutical products, crude oil, machinery and transportation equipment, and vehicles, while the nation mainly imports aircraft, plastics, and chemicals. The main import-export partners of Saint Croix are France, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Netherlands.

Saint Croix has a number of major oil reserves on its territory (mainland plus the dependencies), and the Croisian confederate government earns up to 90 percent of all oil profits. The nation produces almost 1.6 million barrels of oil per day, and exports nearly 1.8 million barrels every day. The massive oil production and export that takes place here makes Saint Croix one of the oil giants like Qatar and Norway, bringing enormous profits to the nation.

Trade and spending, however, has led to a major external debt. Saint Croix owes in excess of 850 billion U.S. dollars. Though, the debt is expected to decrease as the budget surplus this year is more than 13.8 percent of the country's gross domestic product. The public debt of the nation is 61 percent of the GDP. The proven oil reserves in Saint Croix have more than 8.8 billion barrels of oil, having slightly less oil than Angola.

One of the areas of the economy that the government will decrease funding for, hoping to decrease spending and debt, is the military. The military expenditure of the Croisian government will account for less than 0.2 percent of the GDP by 2014, and all of the dependencies will be demilitarized by this date.



The Port of Les Canaries (Le Port de Les Canaries) is the busiest container port in all of Saint Croix. The port handled more than six million containers in 2010.





However, the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Antwerp are both busier. Saint Croix does not export or import as much as Belgium and the Netherlands outside crude oil. Oil is the most important part of the trade. Bad idea, right? That is why the government is now shifting focus onto pharmacy, electronics, and working equipment, hoping that the nation's economy will not collapse if the black gold runs out. Saint Croix and Norway, after all, are the oil supply of Europe.



This nuclear plant provides power to the city of Les Canaries. It is the largest nuclear power station in Saint Croix.
