Cardiff 2009 [BID]
(From the 84 Los Angeles Olympics)
Welcome
What separates the city of Cardiff from all other cities is the passion of sports. I would like to welcome you to Cardiff, ‘The Jewel by the Sea.’ On behalf of everyone in the Republic of Cardiff, welcome to the official Simlympic bid for the October 2009 games. The bid packet will give out important information about the Cardiff Metropolitan Area as well as finance, transport, attractions, venues and everything in between. Hopefully this packet will help out the members of the Simlympic Committee vote on Cardiff for the next Simlympics.
Paul Sullivan
Mayor of Cardiff, member of the CSC
Cardiff, Victoria
With a metropolitan population of 750,000 people, Cardiff is the largest city and the capital of Victoria. Cardiff is home to 500,000 inhabitants within the city proper. The island was formally a part of Canada until 1867 when Victoria, the capital, decided to break away from Canada to form a new island nation. After the break off from Canada, Cardiff became the capital of the country in 1874. Cardiff was founded in 1821 by Sir Robert Macdonald. Cardiff is home 53 districts that are unique in each different way. Near downtown is the Capital District or also known as Government Centre is home to most government departments (a complete guide will be shown later). Government jobs are not only the jobs in the city. Cardiff is the third largest commercial and shipping hub in the Pacific Northwest behind Seattle and Vancouver. The people of Victoria are very athletic and like their sports teams. Cardiff is home to 5 major league teams. All home games within the city are usually sold out. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what the city of Cardiff is like.
Financing the Games
The City of Cardiff has yearly revenue of $450 million. If the games need more money than $800M which is likely to happen, the City of Cardiff is willing to ask the government for money. An estimated $1 billion may be needed to build the necessary venues, transport or anything else that will need to be constructed for the Games. The Republic of Victoria is determined at all costs to win the Simlympics and capital is NOT an issue.
Transport around Cardiff
Cardiff is a major cruising destination for the country. Around 80 cruise ships pass through Cardiff on the way to the City of Victoria. Yearly the cruise ship lines are major revenue sources for Cardiff. Cardiff also has ferry services tat take you around Puget Sound, Vancouver, Victoria, and Seattle.
The best way to get to Cardiff is through the Cardiff International Airport which is located 15-20 minutes from downtown. Cardiff International is the largest in Victoria and has currently two completed terminals, while one other is under construction, and another being planned. When finished the airport will have 80 gates and will be able to handle enough people for the Simlympics or 50 million people yearly.
Below is a map of Cardiff International Airport. The airport is located off the 405 expressway. A small tram provides transport between terminals and has a connection with the Green subway line.
Visitors have the choice of staying at Hotel Circle. Hotel Circle has over 10 hotels and and estimated 10,000-15,000 rooms! hotel Circle will have a subway stop to transport people to downtown or wherever.
After arriving in Cardiff, BART is there for your transport. Bay Area Rapid Transit serves Cardiff as well as other cities and towns within the Cardiff Metropolitan Area. BART has a wide variety of buses, taxis, subways, light rail lines, ferries, and commuter trains. A one-way fee is the same for Buses, subways, light rail, and ferries which is $2.50. You can get a monthly pass can range form $22 to $72 dollars. Day Passes are also available for $5 dollars. Taxis vary on miles per dollar which is usually $4.00 per mile. There are an estimated 9,000+ taxis in Cardiff. The best way to get from Point A to Point B is by Subway/light rail. The main terminal for all subway and light rail lines is located at the City Hall Station. The subway can take you to/from main city attractions, the suburbs, the airport and even the Simlympic Park! There is a planned expansion of several new lines that will be constructed before the end of the end of the year. BART: Moving you anywhere, any place!
Expressways criss-cross the Greater Cardiff Area and are also the best way to get around. During the morning and evening rush hour periods the expressways are normally full of traffic. Visitors should avoid going downtown between 6:00 to 9:00 AM and 4:00 to 7:00 PM due to much congestion. The speed limit is 70 miles per hour on all expressways. This should not hurt Cardiff’s bid in any way due to many transit options visitors can use. The subway has enough room for visitors during the Simlympics. Remember all major cities have their traffic problems.
