Olympic Coverage Empty Olympic Coverage

Post by Melbourne Sun Aug 10, 2008 10:18 pm

Here in Australia, Channel 7 has the broadcasting rights to the Olympics and as such control what we can see. So far we have missed the end of the women's road race because no Australians were doing well, missed any event without an Australian in it, and are showing no-stop soccer and basketball. They are showing no interesting sports. Is anyone else having this issue?

The CBC here in canada is doing pritty much a great job so far. They have been showing lots of diffrent sports with lots of diffrent teams. This is the last year the CBC will be covering the games. In 2010 CTV will take over. Its kinda sad realy.

Yay for isolation! We have no choice but to watch channel 7. They jump around too much and you can never see a full event

Touche, I couldn't agree more. I too live in Australia, except I live in Canberra.

However I do have a bone to pick with Channel, I shouldn't have to get up at 7am in the morning just to see my favourite AFL Team flog Melbourne into the ground.

The thing I hate about olympic coverage in Australia is that it tends to be racist, and if Australia is not good at an event they won't show it, where as if we win something they will replay the over and over and over. I have now seen Stephanie Rice (Aus swimmer) win the 200 Metre Medley 4 times. The thing that pisses me off the most is this is being shown in my office area and every goes nuts watching the replay like as if they have not seen it before even though it has already been shown 3 times before.

well I know NBC.com has an olympic section with some video so for you poor souls in isolation I may suggest that at the least(and then you can see Phelps go for 8 Golds(5 down-3 to go))

well phelps gets telecasts because our male swimmers are so hopeless. Our women have succeeded well with under-dog win of women's 4x200m. Stephanie Rice with 3 Gold.

Ouch, I feel sorry for you guys down under.

In Italy we had satellite so I was able to pick up EuroSport Germany, which wasn't too bad although they tended to show too much swimming, gymnastics and weight lifting for my liking. However, in England we have the good old BBC which has fantastic coverage; they show all the main events, show the events which Brits are in (3d place woo) and have a highlights show each day. There is also the option of pressing the red button which takes you to BBC Interactive allowing you to chose which event you want to see.

I think beating the poms at the Ashes is good enough for me.

So what the Poms got more medals then Australia, as the end of the day we (Australia) always have the upper hand against England in Cricket which is good because the poms invented it, yet they don’t know how to play it .

See the thing I did not like about the olympic coverage here in America (I have Direct TV so I not only had NBC, MSNBC, and USA but Direct TV's special Basketball and Soccer Channels) frankly...... it was too much I maxed out my tivo and just got bored with it after about 5 days. The thing with the US is because we see ourselves most of the time as our heratige not as Americans we tend to route for multiple countries (in my case Italy, Slovokia and the US) so they try to be fair to all the countries and show every inch of coverage. (they did scale down synch diving to just US and eventual meddle winners, allthough that took the excitment out of it because we knew China was winning and then if there were 2 other the US wasnt getting a meddle and those two were.

But that whole Swimming was all that was on, ya thats the same in the US too.... Swimming is a very big deal in the olympics for some reason, mostly because there are a shit lode of swimming events. I wish they would scale that down a bit and show more things like archery, shooting, Badmiton, or table tennis somthing we dont see a lot of and put veriaty into there coverage.

actually MSNBC showed the Archery events and I was happy to see that but they showed it at like 1 in the afternon when everbody was at work I would have liked to have seen the shooting events myself.

but yeah I agree that they focused way too much on the Swimming events but the reason it's so big in the US is well Mark Spitz, and Phelps to name two Swimmers that put Swimming in the mainstream
