Re: Simlympic Torch Relay
Notice: I'm on holiday for two weeks from tomorrow, but sim1234 will be posting all the updates. So, if you have any questions, please ask him .
----------------------------------------------------
Day Five - Republic of Myon - Leech
Nikki: We're coming to you live from Jumper 1--
Nick: It's a GS-1.
Nikki: Well, I like puddle jumper better, and since I'm the one flying, its Jumper 1. Anyway, as I was saying before I was interrupted, we're coming to you live from over Vartak City Park, where the Simlympic Torch is currently making its way though the city of Vartak.
Nick: The Torch will soon head north though Marul, after a quick hand off between runners.
Nikki: The Torch has already made its way up from the waterfront in downtown, and will head up though Marul before heading off to its next destination.
Nick: Vartak City Park, where the recent Torch relay has recently passed though.
Nikki: Not to be confused with the Vartak-Marul City Park, which is just to the north.
Nick: This park is bigger.
Nick: This is the northern area of Vartak, close to downtown.
Nikki: Though the bottom part of the picture is in the twilight zone between Vartak and Marul.
Nick: And the high speed rail line is visible as well.

Re: Simlympic Torch Relay
As Slacker mentioned in his previous post, he is now on holiday and so I'll be posting the updates until the 18th when I'll be going on holiday too. If anyone has any questions about the relay, send me a PM either on this site, on SC4 Devotion or on Simtropolis and I'll be happy to answer them. There are also a few spaces left and so if you want to take part in the relay, either leave a message in this thread or send me a PM.
Day Six - The Shalman Empire - balkair
The Torch Relay is Here!
The torch will pass from some of Ylmeria's and the Empire's most famous landmarks!
At 16:05, Ylmeria time, an emergency broadcast of the Imperial Broadcasting Network was broadcasted, as the airship carrying the flame was nearing Ylmeria. The event was covered live:
The first stop of the Simlymic Flame was the Technological Exhibition. Many people gathered in the grounds to see the Simlympic Flame.
Many people also gathered at the Imperial Archives for the same reason:
But a stunning number of people gathered in Aurorium to watch Crown Prince Nadior, who was voted the sexiest man in the Empire, carry the flame. They (mostly the girls) gave the police a hard time!
And finally at 20:00 the flame arrives at the Imperial Opera in front of Obelisk Park, where the Empire has organized a grand firework display. On the Imperial Opera House you can see a screen counting down to the biggest sporting event in the COFR, which are the PanAndromedan Games of August 15th, and will be hosted by the Empire.
The crowd had to be entertained while they waited, so the Empire organized for some stuff to happen before the flame arrived:
Despite the light rain, the last torch runner lit the Torch in front of the Imperial Opera House, sarounded by cheering crowds:
And of course some light rain would never stop a fireworks display like this one:

Re: Simlympic Torch Relay
Day 9 - No Relay Leg Scheduled.
Day 10 - Tales at TeaTime - TheTeaCat
Every two years, people around the world wait in anticipation as a torch-bearing runner enters the Olympic arena and lights the cauldron. The symbolic lighting of the Olympic flame marks the beginning of another historic Olympic Games.
The opening ceremony is the end of a long journey for the Olympic torch. By the time it arrives in the stadium, it has traveled thousands of miles. It may have crossed oceans and deserts and traversed mountains. It may have been carried on planes, trains, bicycles, boats, and even dog sleds. And it will have passed through the hands of thousands of different people around the globe.
Fire has always held great power for humans. It cooks our food, keeps us warm, and lights our way through the dark.
Beautiful decorative fresco painting depicting the moment the Olympic flame is lit by the priests (Hellanodikae) to commence the ancient Olympic games.
The ancient Greeks revered the power and fire. In Greek mythology, the god Prometheus stole fire from Zeus and gave it to humans. To celebrate the passing of fire from Prometheus to man, the Greeks would hold relay races. Athletes would pass a lit torch to one another until the winner reached the finish line.
The Greeks held their first Olympic Games in 776 B.C. The Games, held every four years at Olympia, honored Zeus and other Greek gods. The Olympics also marked the beginning of a period of peace for the often warring Greeks. At the start of the Games, runners called "heralds of peace" would travel throughout Greece, declaring a "sacred truce" to all wars between rival city-states. The truce would remain in place for the duration of the games, so that spectators could safely travel to the Olympics.
In Olympia, there was an altar dedicated to Hera, goddess of birth and marriage.
The Olympic torch is lit several months before the start of the actual games. The flame begins its journey at the site of the original Olympic Games -- Olympia, Greece. It is lit, just as it was in ancient times, at the Temple of Hera.
An actress dressed as a ceremonial priestess, in the robes of the ancient Greeks, lights the torch via the same technique used in the original Games. She uses a parabolic mirror to focus light rays from the sun. The parabolic mirror has a curved shape. When it is held toward the sun, the curvature focuses the rays to a single point. The energy from the sun creates a great deal of heat. The priestess holds a torch in the center of the parabolic mirror, and the heat ignites the fuel in the torch, sparking a flame.
If the sun is not shining on the day of the lighting ceremony, the priestess can light the torch with a flame that was lit on a sunny day before the ceremony.
The flame is carried in a fire pot to an altar in the ancient Olympic stadium, where it is used to light the first runner's torch.
The flame would burn throughout the Games as a sign of purity, reason, and peace.
The Greeks stopped holding their Olympic Games after about a thousand years, and the torch relays and lighting of the flame also stopped. The Olympic Games did not reemerge until 1896, when the first modern Games were held in Athens. The torch relay took a bit longer to reemerge.
The Birth of the Modern Torch Relay
The flame was reintroduced to the Olympics at the 1928 Amsterdam Games. A cauldron was lit, but there was no torch relay.
The first Olympic torch relay was at the 1936 Berlin Summer Games. Carl Diem, a German history professor and Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of the Games introduced the relay as a way of reconnecting the modern Olympics with the Games' historical roots. The flame was lit in Olympia, Greece, just as it had been centuries before. Then it was carried to Berlin, Germany, for the start of the Olympics.
The torch relay was not introduced to the Winter Olympics until the 1952 Games. It was lit that year not in Olympia, Greece, but in Norway, which was chosen because it was the birthplace of skiing. But since the 1964 Olympics at Innsbruck, Austria, every Olympic Games -- Winter and Summer -- has begun with a torch-lighting ceremony in Olympia, Greece, followed by a torch relay to the Olympic stadium.
The Torch Relay
The Olympic Torch Relay begins with the torch lighting in Olympia, Greece. From there, the journey to the host city varies from year to year. The Olympic Games Organizing Committee (OCOG) determines the route, as well as the theme, modes of transportation for the torch, and the stops that it will take along its way to the Opening Ceremony.
The torch is generally carried from one country to another on a plane. Once it arrives in a city, it usually spends one day being carried from torchbearer to torchbearer on foot. It may also be ferried from place to place by car, boat, bicycle, motorcycle, dog sled, horse, or virtually any other type of conveyance.
On certain legs of the relay, the torch must be housed in a special container. For a trip across the Great Barrier Reef before the 2000 Olympic Games, a special torch was designed to burn underwater. On airplanes, where open flames are not allowed, the flame is typically stored in an enclosed lamp, much like a Miner's lamp. At night, it is kept in a special cauldron until the relay begins once again the following day.
As in any relay race, each runner carries the torch for only one short leg of its trip As a runner completes a leg, he lights the torch of the next person in the relay.
It is considered a great privilege to be chosen as a torchbearer. Athletes, actors, musicians, sports figures, and politicians have all carried the flame. In 1996, boxing legend Muhammed Ali lit the Olympic cauldron to mark the start of the Games in Atlanta. But the brunt of the running is done by average citizens all around the world.
Almost anyone can carry a torch, provided that he is at least 14 years old and is able to carry it for at least 400 meters (437 yards). Handicapped people can be (and have been) torchbearers -- they can carry the torch while riding in a wheelchair. The torchbearers are chosen by the Olympic sponsors and organizers, usually because they have made a significant contribution to their community and because they personify the theme of that particular Olympics. The Olympic sponsors (for example, Coca-Cola) also get to choose several torchbearers from within their organizations.
Each torchbearer is accompanied by a caravan with security personnel, a medical team, the media, and extra torches in case the torch the runner is carrying goes out.
At the end of the relay, the last torchbearer enters the Olympic stadium in the host city. The identity of that torchbearer is usually kept secret until the last moment. The final torchbearer is usually an Olympic athlete, sports figure, or an individual who has made a very special contribution to society. That individual runs around the stadium track once, then lights the Olympic cauldron, signaling the official start of the Olympic games.
When the competition ends about two weeks later, the flame is extinguished at the Closing Ceremony, marking the end of the Games.
Now we come to some pics of the crowds lining the streets in readiness for the approaching Torch Relay
Some of the areas the Torch will pass through
When the relay reaches the base of the Arch they will touch the flame to it where it will then travel over it
to the other side where the next torch will be lit so the relay may continue.
An impromptu street party being thrown
Old drive in cinema before redevelopment as Fanzone for the Torch Relay
The completed Fanzone area full of supporters enjoying live pics from the Relay itself.
The Olympic Motto
"Citius, Altius, Fortius."
"Swifter, Higher, Stronger."
Thank you for the Honour of Hosting the Torch Relay
and Hope you all enjoyed your stay.

SIMplMn9: Don't worry about the delay! Your update is fantastic and it was well worth the wait.
I'll be going on holiday for 5 days from tomorrow and so canuck has kindly agreed to take over the relay for a few days and so if you have any questions about the relay, please send them to him.
Day 12 - Pheonoia - SIMplMn9
Here it is....
(Cue Olympic Theme)
Good Morning, and welcome to the Live Coverage of 2008 Penthesili Simlympic Games Torch Relay. I am Ken Rosato.
And I'm Lauren Glassberg.
And in only a few moment, the Pheonoia leg of the relay will officially start with the handing off the torch at the Gardens of the World Park, in East Paradise Valley.
That's right. Today is a big deal for Pheonoia, as this is the first relay that our nation has been awarded. And after the recent Civil War, and Rhodesia Trial, this is definatly something needed to raise national morale. To mark the occasion, All government offices are closed, except for Capital Hill, which is also suppose to shut for the relay within a few minutes.
Thank you, Lauren, currently the torch, which arrived this morning at Pheonoia International, is currently taking the SpeedyRail to the Gardens, to hand off to the first torch bearer. We are now going to go live as the monorail pulls in, and the final torch bearer of the last leg hands the flame off.
And there she is, the final torchberar of the last leg, lighting the torch of Roger Steinback, the first Gold Medalist of Pheonoia, and the honorable first torchbearer for this leg of the relay. Pheonoia will be hosting 6 runners for this leg, representing the 6 medals Pheonoia earned at the last Simlympic games. And it looks like the torch is off, to cheering fans.
As you can see he will be taking the Southwest Corner, to head down the aptly named International Avenue away from the Gardens of the World. The Gardens of the World was designed by an Atlantian landscape artist, and was created as a park to clean up the northern part of East Paradise Valley, following the War of Independance. This was all scorched earth before, and now look at that place, Lauren.
Indeed it is nice, Ken, and currently the Paradise Valley city council is in talk on how to improve the area, there are speculations of a theme park, but also rumors that this may turn into a Simlympic park for a future Paradise Valley bid.
Well, only time, and the Pheonoia Olympic Committee, will decide. We will be back for more Coverage after this.
Welcome back to live coverage of the Phoenoian Leg of the Simlympic Torch Relay, where the first stop of the leg has been reached. I'm Ken Rosato.
And I'm Laura Glassberg. The first stop, at the National Speedway in East Paradise Valley, is where the torch will be passed from Roger Steinbeck to Sarah Ridle, a champion swimmer from Amagosa, from here she will continue down International Avenue heading for the Jefferson Bridge, where the torch relay will leave East Paradise Valley and enter the Capital District, the governmental head of Phenoia. However, Sarah is not the runner to cross the bridge.
No, she will only take the torch as far as the Paradise Valley National Arena, home to the PV BlueJets. Lets watch as the torch comes down the Avenue.
And here the torch will be passed to James Issre, a Pheonoian medalist in Boxing. He really is looking primed to compete this year, deson't he?
He does, and now James will be finishing down International Avenue, and will cross halfway down the Jefferson Bridge. This bridge was built 3 years ago to replace the one that President Gabreles had ordered bombed in order to keep the RNAI from entering the Capital District, and to stop the oncoming navel forces down the Silver River.
And there he goes, he's crossed the bridge, and will be met halfway by the POC director himself! This is a surprise. Samuel Persi was appointed this position within a month of indepedance, and has been close to retirement at the ripe age of 54, however this is definatly someone who is more of a hands on person.
And from here the torch will be passed on at the One World, One Color monument, and take the long way around the Presidential Park itself. Where they will enter into the park from the back, where Capital Hill is, and this will be the only place the torch will techinically stop.
Thats right, Ken, for traditionally the torch must always stay in motion, so the runner will be jogging in place while he is greeted by the Presdient and the heads of the Senate.
And there is the 4th runner, being hailed on the steps of Captial Hill, where the Senate resides. He will now travel down the park back towards the One World, One Color monument.
Lauren it should be noted that the monument was almost piece by piece replicated back in the Gardens, it just a design that could not be passed up.
There he goes, running the length of the Park itself. The only real shame here is that the 5th Runner, Kevin Osterleeth, has to pass by the former Presidential Hall, which if we remember was burned during the Civil War. And that is just one of charges filed against now disgraced Senator Diane Finstien.
It is a shame, but it should also be noted that Presdient Gabreles actually requested the leg of the Simlympics not be adjusted to avoid the Hall. He said that a true nation is not graded its archetexture, but on its people. And as we see this mass of crowds down the torch path, I can see exactly what he meant by that.
Alright, here we are, the last stretch of the leg, where the final runner, Jake Leslin, the son of the late Senator Leslin, is heading for Shatanoga tower at the end of the Park portion of the Presdiential Park.
Right Laura, the Park actually stretches from the Memorial to the northeast, to this pagoda structure here, and also breaches from the middle Northwest to Southeast as well, criscrossing the Captial District.
Alright, here is lighting the base of the tower, which was refitted for this exact purpose. The flames are lighting in a spiral up the tower...
It's lit! This tower will remain lit throughout the games, and just in time too. Now while Leslin prepares to fly to the next country to pass the torch off for the next leg, Paradise Valley will be in celebration until nightfall, where a fireworks display will light the skys, including a spectaculr display over Capital Hill.
This is Laura Glassberg,
And I'm Ken Rosato, thanking you for turning into PBC 7's live coverage of the Phoenoian Leg of the 2008 Penthesili Simlympic Games Torch relay.

Re: Simlympic Torch Relay
fantastic updates and enjoy your vacation I'll be sitting here jealous of you and slacker lol
Re: Simlympic Torch Relay
since Slacker and Sim1234 are both on vacation it's time for me to step in for this leg of the torch relay thread. so without further adeau I present the lost Day 16 and today's Day 18
Day 16 - New Castia(Waterfalls) - Pat
the excitment of the torch coming threw New Castia caused this poor driver to wipe out, gezzs I swear that DOT needs to enforce safety here....
now leaving for the route
The arrival at the stadium to light the torch, before continuing on the route...
Day 18 - Port Matthew - NMUSpidey
THE TORCH RELAY PASSES THROUGH PORT MATTHEW!!!!
So, the torch will pass through East Bank to start, crossing over the Eastern Arch Bridge between Patton Motors HQ and LG (Leugim/Greek) Towers.
It will continue through Southport between the Matthew Dome and Thunderbolt Stadium, continuing towards Defenders' Square and over Defenders' Bridge (you like how my city has a consistent and coherent naming scheme? Is it a credit to my planning or simply lack of creativity? YOU be the judge!;D).
The Torch will pass near Defenders' Tower and continue over Shimbashi/ New Crossing on its way back to PMI to move towards the next city. It really doesn't go through the Cliffs neighborhood, I mostly just wanted to show how good it looks with the trees finally added.
Police Square is cleared early in the morning for the Torch to pass through. Captain Willis and the Power Unit are determined to make it a peaceful celebration!
Past the Matthew Dome (If I knew how to add people in here, there would be a much larger crowd).
In front of PMTV Studios a crowd is also starting to build! Can you feel the excitement in the air??
I debated with myself over posting this image. I decided to in order to find out if my half-dozen readers can answer this question: Does anyone know how to make it so that it's actual concrete or something under the monorail tracks instead of plain grass? It looks a little strange in the middle of downtown...
And here's the route. There was some concern that it was too long and that people would be upset if their workday was disrupted due to the length of road that would be off-limits, but the city as a whole was behind the plan, and the opportunity to see The Defenders running in the flesh would be worth calling a national holiday.
When asked about the opportunity to run with the Torch, Fearless quipped to the press that he was ecstatic about his team being able to participate in the Relay, especially since the Torch's final destination wouldn't be Beijing.
Pierce was heard behind him saying, "Oooo, burn..." in a sarcastic voice.
And finally, here's a new thing I'm going to try:

Day 19-Delkon Forrest-dlrjfn2000
The Torch Relay Comes to the USNSE
After much secrecy about the new Simlympic Park from Delkon Forrest brass it is finally unveiled to the world in the Simlympic Torch Relay
Through an amazing part of luck on my part the torch relay ended for the New Castians at the sea and so it will begin the same for me (no rhyme scheme intended)
The torch relay begins at the Simlympic Park ferry landing.
The first runner is the president of the USNSE himself Michel Fischer signified in red not only the state color of the USNSE but one of the three colors on the logo of the upcoming games. He will head straight west toward the duck pond as its been called in Delkon Forrest. Inside of the duck pond several thousand lights have been placed to shine reflections on top of the water a view point so special to the USNSE symbolic of its past in water. Today 3 logo's appear off the water at the top the Simlympic Torch relay, in the middle the Delkon Forrest Proposal logo and at the bottom the current simlympic logo in congratulations.
The second runner signified in blue a second color on the August Simlympic logo is first Daughter Lauren Fischer. Lauren was in a former rowing champion winning the world championships at 17 just before simlympic trials began. But her father still on the campaign trail at the time and governor of Maine was sitting with his youngest daughter Margret and the son of the Delkon Forrest's Mayor at the Mayoral residence in the north end of Delkon Forrest when they received grim news that the governors limo had been in a car accident as Lauren Fischer, fellow simlympic rower Eliza White and Simlympic Swimmer Alex Brown were on there way home from training at the Delkon Forrest University Gym. Eliza Brown was killed instantly and Lauren was left paralyzed from the waist down and in a coma for several days. She returns to her public life and will carry the simlympic torch with her father past Admrial's stadium.
At the base of route 2 she will hand the torch to Stephanie Pelton the tennis star from the USNSE who the Tennis Stadium just two blocks away is named after. Her route is based in yellow for two reasons, firstly and foremost it is the final color on the August Simlympic logo, and secondly it is Stephanie's favorite color she wore Yellow and used a yellow racket at every match and is seen as her lucky color.
Stephanie's route will take her up past the National broadcasting Center that will host the Press for the games, and also by the Coca Cola convention center. Once again the Simlympic torch and August Simlympic logo's preside on the buildings.
Stephanie's route through the downtown area is once again showed this time highlighting the skyline so rarely shown off by the Delkon Forrest City. Once again the logo of the Simlympic torch can be seen atop the Coca Cola Convention Center and also the keen eye can see the Delkon Forrest logo painted on the side of the National Broadcasting center.
Once on the other side of route 1 Stephanie will pass the torch to the Delkon Forrest Mayor's son and a shooter expected to do very well in the August Games 17 year old Tomaso Delkon who's great grandfather settled with cousin Adam Petty as the first white residence of the area. (as opposed to Native American's that had been living there before) He will run by the Delkon Forrest Country club and then hand the torch off to an official Simlympic torch official who will drive it to the next city in the relay.
The Delkon Forrest Olympic Committee would also like to point out several things within the shots above.
