The race for 2016..
Been recently getting into the bids (you know, the REAL ones ) for the 2016 games. There was some talk of it on the old forms, and I was wondering what you guys thought of it (if anything at all. )
Chicago 2016
Baku 2016
Doha 2016
Madrid 2016
Prague 2016
Rio 2016
Tokyo 2016
Chicago 2016
Baku 2016
Doha 2016
Madrid 2016
Prague 2016
Rio 2016
Tokyo 2016
Re: The race for 2016..
Thanks for bringing this back up here .
I've had a quick look at each sites and most of the bids look very interesting (Madrid website rocks!). I think Madrid and Prague have next to no chance at all, 3/4 Olympics in Europe since 2004? Don't think so. I also don't think Doha or Baku will be able to compete with Rio, Tokyo or Chicago, but we shall see.

Re: The race for 2016..
Short list is more of a "hey look at what we have in store for 2020" it is really just saying the #'s 4 nd have like a 10X better chance at that city...
I think that it probably ganna be
Chicago
Tokyo
Madrid
Baku
Prague
More than likely ganna be Tokyo... I love ya chicago but with bush in office and the falling price of the dollar... i see that Tokyo probably has got it...

Re: The race for 2016..
bush will be outta office by January 2009,who knows who will be in office by then and I bet by 2016 the economy will be better
Re: The race for 2016..
probably... but the announcment for 2016 is in 2009... Which leads me to wonder if america can re-do the economic blunders
Re: The race for 2016..
the IOC doesn't always take that into consideration especially since the US isn't exactly in that bad of shape(albeit it's bad but not nearly as bad as it could be trust me on this one I live in the State in the worst economic shape we've been in a one state recession for 4 years now.) and with a new President comming in the IOC may see a change takeing place here and still move that and the Chicago bid is a strong one gaining more and more backing

Re: The race for 2016..
Well as of now it is:
Chicago
Tokyo
Madrid
Rio
Tokyo won't get it because it was in Beijing only this year. My bet goes to either Chicago or Rio if they address their problems.
The runner up will most likely try for the 2020 Olympics, which my hometown Melbourne is going to bid for. Should be interesting

Re: The race for 2016..
Chicago is already gearing up for 2016 I was just there last month and they're already overhauling(revamping) the EL/Subway system in adition to some other changes going on so yeah Rio/Chicago are the only real choices
Tokyo-with bejing in 08 not likely
Madrid-Doubt the'd do back to back Europe Games
Rio-hmmm could be a great location haven't seen a whole lot of their bid so I don't really know what to say on theirs
Chicago-Big City,Great Transit,and a Great Sports town

I think Chicago will get it. Did anyone hear what Obama said about it 'By the time the 2016 Chicago Olympics begin I'll be finishing off my second term' .

Re: The race for 2016..
Chicago wont get it. The votes will likely go down like this:
Madrid out first.
Chicago out second.
Rio win.
Theres gonna be a massive massive push to get South America the games. This isnt 2004 with the motherland bidding, and Rio will likely get the games, even though they have World Cup 2014. Chicago wont have a chance in hell, theres still a dislike towards the USOC over payments in the IOC right now that has quite a few people bitter and the problem wont be resolved anytime soon. Throw in American policy (heh, there screwed if they leave Iraq and there screwed if they dont), and Chicago aint gonna last long. Madrid goes out really early as all the Latino votes go for Rio this time around. Plus, this likely a set up for a really strong 2018 winter bid (look at the pattern, Rome loses 04, Italy gets 06 winter, Toronto loses 08, Vancouver gets 10, Moscow loses 12, Sochi gets 14), the winter games have turned into a consolation prize. Tokyo could get the games - for people saying Beijing is too close, well, Athens 04 and London 12, both European games and both are 8 years apart, and Beijing and Tokyo are father apart then London and Athens. The big downfall for Tokyo are two things: 1. Rio, 2. The fact there using old venues. The IOC has shown time and again a preference big new shiney white elephant venues, and Tokyo doesnt have many of those.
One more fact for those, no two back to back summer olympics have been less then 6 hours apart time zone wise since London 1948 and Helsinki 1952. So a Rio win could kill North American chances for 2020 and open the door wide for another heavy weight round of European bidders.

Re: The race for 2016..
WOW.... He does make a VERY conviceing point...
And that is true... Usually runners up get the winter olympics... and yeah as its turning out if thats the way the games fall through then more than likely it might end up like this...
1.Rio
2.Chicago Or Tokyo
3.Chicago or Tokyo
4. Madrid
And i belive thats the way it will play out... The last time their was a summer games in the southern hemisphere it was Sydney 2000. The IOC wants at least one Olympic games in Latin america by the time 2020 rolls around... If Tokyo comes in second expect Nagano or Sapporo to bid and eventually win the bid for 2018. If its Chicago expect the U.S. to wait for 2020 to bid New York or Los Angeles. And if you don't believe that then look at Beijing.... It bidded in 1993 for 2000 in 2002 it bided for 2008 and was its second time biding.
its ganna get a little crazy because you now have to add in places like Dubai (which no doubt will be bidding in 2020 or 2024),Osaka, Moscow, Cape Town, Melbourne, Doha, Debrunvik, and Manchester....
Although i doubt any of these places will be bidding any time soon or have the infastructure to win
The bidding tank is getting MUCH bigger... Its not Just Tokyo, New York, Paris, And London..
These IOC matches are getting a lot more challenging and its getting harder...

Re: The race for 2016..
Beijing, the only reason why they never got 2000 was because of Tiananmen 89. And also, they said they would never ever bid again, which was why there was no 04 bid.
The Middle East will never host games with the current IOC attitude - Doha scored higher then Rio but was left out because the games where outside the time the IOC wanted them, and holding them in the time the IOC wants them isnt possible because of high temperatures. Manchester, Osaka will never succeed eithier - its much like Leipzig 2012, the IOC only wants a countries main city(ies) bidding these days. And Osaka was roasted in the 08 bids.
Oh also, if Chicago doesnt finish last, I suspect they'll have another go in 2020, and it would be a hell of a battle as Toronto would be bidding as well - Toronto's past bids have been a victim of being ill timed, and if they come back with a nicely tweaked 08 plan for there 2020 bid, then that could be a very very great bid, they got shafted in 08 because of Beijing.

Re: The race for 2016..
I think a lot will depend on how South Africa will handle the 2010 World Cup, hopefully it goes well for them.

Re: The race for 2016..
It also depends on if Rio wins 2016, if they do, no way any country in Africa gets 2020, and possibly even 2024, and the IOC wont want to risk two back to back new frontier games.
Re: The race for 2016..
I've got a friend from Cape Town, and he says they're kicking the poor out of downtown and trying to quell the crime in Johannesburg.. according to him, the policies they're taking out to pretty up the area are pretty bad.. they better do something big to constitute treating the poor like ish...
But yeah.... Chicago is a lock for 2016, I believe. America's image is improving abroad, we're losing bush in a matter of months (won't we miss him.), and it will be 10 years since Atlanta '96 (the disaster that was)
We'll win it. I guarantee it... then Cape Town and Paris get theirs. (I hope.)
