Nyhaven, Lower Columbia
CANDIDATE CITY
City Overview
Nyhaven is the largest city in the Constitutional Monarchy of Lower Columbia, boasting a population of one million. For a few years after the nation was founded, it served as the national capital; King Edward, the first monarch, resided in what is now the Museum of National History, while Parliament met in Nyhaven City Hall. Monuments honoring past kings and notable citizens and events are scattered across the city—monuments such as this statue of King Tristan beside the Broadway Pier:
The following statistics should help committee members get acquainted with the city:
Total residents: 1,012,304
Total service jobs: 448,909
Total industrial jobs: 250,196
Regional budget: $62,152,867
Net monthly loss: $61,446, or less than .1% of the regional budget
Average mayor rating: 100.93
Average EQ: 166.96
Average lifespan: 86.16 years
Average commute time: 44.36 minutes
Resident average income: $47,600
Total arrests vs. crimes: 105/132
As you can see from these statistics, Nyhaveners enjoy terrific levels of public service, though such services are a drain on the budget. The projected revenues from Simlympic-related tourism would provide a major economic boost, creating thousands more jobs before, during, and even after the Games take place.
Athletic Venues
Nyhaven has no shortage of active sporting venues, and several existing locations could also be modified to hold Simlympic events if the ISC deems it necessary. The centerpiece of this bid, however, is a massive (120+ acres) Olympic park at the northern end of Shelby Island. Below is a detailed plan of the site, which was previously home to several small farms:
The various proposed buildings have been color-coded for the ISC’s viewing pleasure, as follows: the yellow buildings will be the site’s two major stadiums, orange buildings are additional minor venues, red areas are support facilities, including the existing police station, grey buildings will be huge parking garages, and the white areas will be the Olympic village, housing all Simlympic athletes and their coaches. Some of the minor stadiums have already been built:

Attractions
When Simlympic spectators aren’t attending events, they will have plenty of other things to do, no matter their preferences. Nyhaven boasts an unparalleled array of places to visit, from museums to parks to theatres to clubs and restaurants. Many such attractions are located in the world-famous Midtown Entertainment District, pictured below:
Within these 14 blocks immediately south of United Airlines Arena are numerous restaurants, including a Hard Rock Café; the Pan-Pacific Performing Arts Center; the Regal and Odeon Theatres; and a wide array of clubs, including the tallest in Lower Columbia, the ATOM Blue. Within downtown are located the Museum of Indian Art and Nyhaven Central Library, as well as a few single- and double-screen cinemas dating back to the 20s and 30s.
Those who would rather take in the city’s fresh air and pleasant summer temperatures can stroll beside the banks of the Columbia River in downtown’s new waterfront park, which is also home to the King Adam Aquarium and Broadway Pier:
Somewhat farther afield, in the Riverside Heights neighborhood, is the area called Culture Corner:
This intersection is home to three museums, the city aquarium, and the King Michael II Library, making it perfect for the more cultured guest.
Accommodations
Visitors in need of a place to stay during the Simlympics will not be disappointed. Nyhaven is home to myriad hotels, both within downtown and near the airport. Also, a few hotel chains have expressed interest in building locations within the Olympic park if Nyhaven is selected as host city. Here is a list of the top ten hotels in central Nyhaven (there are many more that did not make the cut):
Hyatt Nyhaven: 378 N. 1st Street. By far the largest and tallest hotel in town. Spectacular views of the Columbia and the best room-service menu in the region. 5 stars
Richard: 256 E. Main Street. Another large hotel, but this one has been locally owned since its opening in the 1920s. 5 stars
Marriott Downtown: 179 S. 3rd Street. A bit away from the bustle of the financial core of the city, but still near all the tourist attractions. 4 stars
Doubletree Waterfront: 132 The Embankment. Downtown's newest hotel; it sits right on the waterfront. 5 stars
Highlander: 150 W. Avenue D. Popular with business travelers. 4 stars
Wagner: 70 E. Main Street. Directly across Founders' Square from City Hall, this smaller, locally-owned hotel boasts some of the most scenic views of major landmarks. 5 stars
Palms: 471 N. 3rd Street. A little bit of the Mexican Riviera in the Pacific Northwest. 5 stars
Excelsior: 464 N. Nyhaven Boulevard. Art-deco styling and top-rated service. 5 stars
Washington: 626 S. 6th Street (Midtown). For the well-heeled traveler who wants to savor midtown's nightlife. 5 stars
Best Western Midtown: 718 S. 9th Street. More family-oriented - and affordable. 4 stars
Here is a map of downtown and midtown to help place all these hotels:
Transportation
Besides all these wonderful places, Nyhaven has a transportation network to match. Nyhaven International Airport is a hub for both United Airlines and Lower Columbia’s national airline, Columbiair. Its 80 gates and four runways can handle the massive amount of air traffic the Simlympics would throw at it without even breaking a proverbial sweat. Also, a new express rail line now connects the airport with both downtown and the Olympic park. Here is an overview of how the airport appeared before the rail line was built:
Meanwhile, the light rail network has undergone extensive expansion in the past several years, providing access to the Olympic park via a modern transfer station between the Black and Pink Lines. Below is a full map of the metro rail network:
For those spectators who would rather drive, a large highway system also exists, connecting all points within the metropolis. In the following map, the yellow lines indicate highways built in the past decade. This map does not show the newest highway, Route 404, which runs between I-203 and N-830 through East Nyhaven.
Security
In light of the danger certain radical groups can cause during major events like the Simlympics, the national government and city police will work together to keep Nyhaven safe during the Games. Near the Olympic park is Tilden Air Force Base, which would be used for military flyovers:
Overall, however, Lower Columbia is a very safe nation, and no troubles are expected during the Games.
