PAS (Points Allocation System) [PAS now offline] Empty PAS (Points Allocation System) [PAS now offline]

Post by Slacker Mon Nov 03, 2008 5:53 am

Our Points Allocation System allows competitors to decide which sports their athletes should do best in, all from one easy to use spreadsheet.

Each competing nation receives 800 points which they can use to assign to all the different Simlympic sports. With the new system, nations can now chose not to compete in certain sports simply by assigning that sport with 0 points.

PAS is now closed for the October Simlympics. It will reopen again before the next games.

Bonus points:
+40 for every Simlympics attended (Competing in the Simlympics raises the profile of sport in the country, thus meaning the country is more likely to win medals)
+160 for the host nation (The host nation always receives a boost thanks to home crowds and being familiar with the venues, climate etc)
+80 for past hosts (Hosting a Simlympics raises the profile of sport in the country significantly, thus meaning the country is more likely to win medals)
+30 for past bids (Bidding for the Simlympics raises the profile of sport in the country significantly, thus meaning the country is more likely to win medals)

Looks interesting..

A thought that popped into my head as I was reading that - Dependencies/Autonomous Territories/Second Countries that people want could be scaled off that:

Primary Country = 100% of points allocation (ie. 500 base points)
Second Country/Territory = 50% of points allocation (250 points)
Third Country/Territory = 25% of points allocation (125 points)
etc. halving the base points for each subsequent territory. Everything else is calculated as normal (but how likely is it that a secondary country bids or hosts a Simlympics?).

Minor countries don't have a whole lot of success at Olympics compared to the big guns, so this ensures that they'll only be competitive in a few events at most, while still competing.

So you could get all those with multiple territories (such as myself) to 'rank' them on entry, so mine would be:
Æscgeard = Joe 90 [1] (all 500 points)
Martelia = Joe 90 [2] (250 pts)
Cruithness = Joe 90 [3] (125 points)
etc.

Disagreed, could easily be used for cheating.

Whatever country you enter in the simlympic gets all the point, it cant get any simplier than that, it also gives everyone all a fair chance. Again, theres no big or small guy.

Joe: Yeah, exactly. Dependencies will receive less points than the primary country. I like your idea of having less for third/fourth/etc dependencies, and using the primary country as a base rather than calculating each dependencies points and then reducing it by x%. Thanks Very Happy.

Kumba: We're talking about dependencies here. For instance in Joe's case, the backstory for his main country involves a few other smaller nations. When signing up to compete he indicated they were dependencies of Æscgeard and therefore they will receive less points. Not because they're small countries, but because they are dependencies. Only two people have dependencies, so it's not really a big issue anyway Smile.

Well it was because they were small countries and not dependencies, but the point still stands. They are peripheral to my story and I'm happy if they are disadvantaged because of that.

The only way they could be used for 'cheating' is if you dumped all your points into one event, but that could still be done (to greater effect) with a primary country , and I'm sure Slacker would pick up on it before the medal rounds anyway. Maybe you need to specify no more than x% of your points can be used on any single event?

And just to clarify - I'd use the 500 points as a base rather than the primary country's points. I mean, how much does French Polynesia benefit from France hosting something?

Ok so I can easily state I have 10 dependency countrie, and I want point for all of them...

See how easy it is to cheat?

I still say, you have one nation, and you only get point for that nation, its a lot easier that way.

Joe: Yeah, I just wanted to make it clear that this doesn't apply to small countries; only dependencies.

I don't see it as cheating using all of a countries points in one event too, if someone wants to only give themselves a chance (admittedly, a very high chance) of winning medals in one event than that's fine.

Kumba: No ones using it to cheat, the only two people that have dependencies have proven beyond a doubt that the dependencies actually exist. I'm not just going to allow anyone to come along and say "I have x number of dependencies, let me in".

Under my system your fourth team would have a grand total of 63 points. If you put all that in one event, most primary nations should still be able to outpoint you comfortably - even with a balanced schedule. Your sixth team would only have 16 points. Your tenth team would get the princely sum of 1 point. There are diminishing returns, and the drop off is pretty steep.

Points per dependency:

Primary: 500
2nd: 250
3rd: 125
4th: 63
5th: 31
6th: 16
7th: 8
8th: 4
9th: 2
10th: 1

actually Kumba if you have 10 Dependancies the main Nation recives 500pts
and then
Dependancy 1-250
Dependancy 2-125
Depandancy 3-63
Depandancy 4-32
Depandancy 5-16
Dependancy 6-8
Dependancy 7-4
Dependancy 8-2
Dependancy 9-1

so as you see each Dependant Nation get's less points than the first hardly cheating this system was used in Nation States and if policed right it isn't any form of cheating

Mine go in this order:

2. Cruithness
3. Deheubarth
4. Kincathra
5. Altriu

You can ditch the rest - they were a little too peripheral.

ahhh fair enough joe well there's a master list and when someone enters their point son the site it kicks said numbers to slacker who also holds the master list of point allocation so there really isn't a way for a nation to cheat that system.

Kumba: Yes.

Kitsune: I think we can trust people to be truthful. But if we get two different entries for a country, alarm bells will start ringing and appropriate action will be taken. Having the pass code just slows the entire process down.
