Re: Racing News
haha , yes, While I know your in NZ, to the best of my knowledge thats the only Former British State which doesn't have Stock Cars
Britain: F1 Stock Cars, F2 Stock Cars, Hotrods
Ireland: ditto
South Africa: They had an ASA Race for cryin out loud!
Austrailia: NASCAR was going to expand at one time there. AUSCAR
Canada: NASCAR does race there.
All are or were on ovals too
Edit: To a previous comment Joe: Stewert only 1/2 owns his team There's only really been 1 Owner-Driver Champion, Alan Kulwicki 1992

Re: Racing News
A "Stock Car" by definition is a saloon car in showroom or near-showroom condition used for racing - literally a car thats in stock. Ironically NASCAR no longer fits that definition, but it isn't a surprise that other places have them too, as its a pretty cheap and basic form of racing. NASCAR in its current form is a silhouette series, like the DTM. The V8s are moving in that direction too.simsamerica wrote:haha , yes, While I know your in NZ, to the best of my knowledge thats the only Former British State which doesn't have Stock Cars

Its more telling that outside of the USA, the only active ovals I know of are Rockingham in the UK, Lausitzring in Germany, and Motegi in Japan. Monza might still count, but thats a stretch. As far as I can tell, they're not often used for actual oval racing - more 'roval' stuff.
AUSCAR is pretty much dead I think (at least its been years since I heard anything), and the Calder Park Thunderdome has weeds growing though it.
And in NZ we have our own successful V8 touring car series too so we don't need 'em
My point exactly. It takes a special person to do both successfully.simsamerica wrote:Edit: To a previous comment Joe: Stewert only 1/2 owns his team There's only really been 1 Owner-Driver Champion, Alan Kulwicki 1992

Re: Racing News
Touche. AUSCAR is dead, I wasn't thinking Rockingham, more Birmingham Wheels and Foxhall Stadium. There is also one in Holland near the German Border (within a mile I think). Alot of racetracks in america actually do have "Stock Cars" to the purest form it could really be. There are 3 at my local track. Race tracks in america are like Soccer Stadiums in England almost
Re: Racing News
I think the distinction we're referring to is short dirt ovals vs paved ovals.
Permanent paved ovals are rare outside of the US, as is the higher-level 'stock car' racing like NASCAR.
However, short track dirt speedways (for sprint cars/stockcars - USAC type stuff) are pretty big here and in Oz - big enough to attract some of the top US drivers for a kind of 'working holiday' and big enough that we can beat your boys too
Steve Williams (Tiger's caddy) is a former NZ Super Saloons champ

Re: Racing News
And Wacky the only NASCAR races worth watching are when they do the road courses which is what the lower circuit does when they race in Montreal
Re: Racing News
Pretend you're looking me in the eye and say you watch Bristol for the racing.
I watch Bristol because it looks good under lights (I don't watch the day race), and for the carnage, because there is always carnage. But that isn't racing.
